The aland Islands consist of a group of islands in the Baltic Sea between Finland and Sweden. The islands belong to Finland even though the population of 26.000 people is swedish speaking to over 95. The aland Islands have a system of self determination, an autonomous province in Finland. For the fixed telecommunications there are two local telephone companies, Mariehamns Telefon Ab (telecom operator since 1892) and alands Telefonandelslag (telecom operator since 1910), on the islands. These two companies operate over 90 of the 19.000 local lines. Sonera, Alands Telefonandelslag, the Finnish PTT, operate 10 of the local lines.
