With the gradual liberalization of China's telecommunication market along with the imminent accession to the World Trade Organization, in January of 2000, CITIC Pacific strategically implemented its investment in installing a nationwide optical fiber backbone network, the "China Express No. 1 Backbone network", in the PRC. CITIC Telecom 1616 Ltd. is CITIC Pacific's interconnection telecom platform in Hong Kong connecting China and the overseas. Together with "China Express No. 1 Backbone Network", the platform will act as a converging point for telecommunication traffic between China and the rest of the world. It will also help establish Hong Kong as the communication hub for Asia Pacific.
