The mobile operator, part of Egypt-based Orascom Telecom, won the licence against four major international bidders France's Alcatel, Motorola of the US, Sweden's Ericsson and Germany's Siemens with a bid of 481 million, the largest ever single investment in Algeria outside of the oil and gas sector. Djezzy launched in the capital, Algiers, and expects to extend its services to 11 other cities. Mobile phone demand indicates that the company will have signed up more than half a million subscribers by the end of this year alone.
