Since 1841, Queen's has played a pivotal role in developing national leaders. From our ivy-covered buildings, students go out into the world to achieve greatness in their own lives, help shape their country's destiny, and make a lasting difference in society. Like all great institutions, Queen's University derives its greatness from a series of deliberate, often difficult decisions that have shaped and defined its unique character. In the history of Queen's, there have been many such decisions, but two in particular have profoundly influenced the character and distinctive strengths of this university. The first decision was to forsake its church-based origins in favour of a secular future. Equally significant, in the early 1960s, was the decision to follow a path of measured and moderate growth at a time when there was tremendous pressure -- as well as abundant resources - to expand significantly. These decisions were made in response to changing circumstances.
